General Montgomery C. Meigs Graduated from West Point 1836, replaced Joseph E.
Johnson as quartermaster general, serving as such until his retirement in
1881.Meigs was responsible for final construction of the capital building.He was one of the principal architects of Arlington
Cemetery. During the war
the general was responsible for military transport and created what became
known as the army signal corp.
