General Anderson - CDV captures General Robert Anderson (1805 - 1871) who is known for his command of
Fort Sumter at the beginning of the Civil War. General
Anderson preferred to be called Major Anderson, referring to his days at Fort Sumter. According to some historians, General Anderson played a part in the meaning of the American Flag; Anderson moved the American garrison from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter in defiance of the overwhelming power of the new Confederate States of America. After his move of the flag, flags were mass produced instead of stitched because people were no longer using the flag merely to mark territory, but instead to show patriotism. Back of card reads "Charles D. Fredricks & Co., ‘Specialite,’ 587 Broadway New York.” The front of the card reads "entered, according to Act of Congress, in the year 1861, by C.D. Fredricks Co., in the Clerk’s Office of the United States for the Southern District of New York.”
