Gen. Quincy Adams Gillmore CDV, 3/4 view, of the general in uniform with his sword. He graduated at the top of his United States Military Academy class of 1849. He first won recognition for the bombardment and capture of Fort Pulaski, Ga. While commanding the Dept. of the South and the X Corps he achieved the captures of Morris Island and Fort Wagner and the destruction of Fort Sumter. He participated in the defense of Washington, D.C. against Lt. Gen. Jubal Early during which his horse fell and injured him severely. Back marked E. & H.T. Anthony, New York.
