12301 8th Minnesota Capt. John S. Cady - This great CDV shows
Captain John S. Cady of the 8th Minnesota Vol. Infantry who
was KIA on 6/11/1863 by Sioux Indians.  He resided in Anoka,
MN and enlisted at the age of 26 as a Captain.  On 8/16/1862 he
was commissioned into “A” Co. MN 8th Infantry and was killed
on 6/11/1863 at Kandiyohi Lakes, MN by Indians.  Some excerpts
from notes submitted by Roger Norland read
    “Upon his arrival at the post (Manannah) he ascertained that
    a small squad of Indians had passed through that vicinity
    with horses which they had stolen from settlers...Capt. Cody,
    on overtaking his men, took command in pursuit of the
    Indians....He came upon the Indians in ambush, who fired
    upon the command, instantly killing Captain Cady.  He was
    shot through the head...Cady was one of the best officers of
    the regiment and was universally respected by his
    comrades....”      $450
