Leonard Wood (1860-1927) was a physician who served as the
Chief of Staff of the US Army, was the Military Governor of
Cuba, and Governor General of the Philippines.  Wood
participated in the last campaign against Geronimo in 1886, and
was awarded the Medal of Honor for carrying dispatches 100
miles through hostile territory and for commanding an infantry
detachment (whose officers had been lost) in hand-to-hand
combat against the Apache.
