was one of very few militia officers who
rose to distinction in the volunteer ranks
during the Civil War, and remained in
the Regular Army to attain the rank of
major general.  Later he was in charge of
the Dept. of the Dakota during the Battle
of Little Big Horn in 1876.  Trimmed at
