17599 General William H. Morris 1827 - 1900  
appointed in 1846 to West Point  from New
York.  Morris was commissioned colonel of the
6th NY Heavy Artillery, serving in the defense of
Baltimore.  Promoted to brigadier general in
1862.  He was held in reserve at the battle of
Gettysburg and afterwards participating in the
pursuit of Lee's army. He later fought at the
Wilderness and Spotsylvania.  Severely wounded
at the latter engagement and being mustered out
