general in uniform. Member of the West Point
class of 1839. Although he was very successful in
business and in writing and acquired a fortune,
he was not so well regarded as a military
officer. His primary virtue may have been his
unflinching insistence upon order and discipline,
which was lacking in the early days of the war.
