Fredericksburg, Va.  Mr. Henricksen, General Sherman
thanks you kindly for the present of fine strawberries sent
by your interesting little girls.  May your crop be limitless
and may you never again be disturbed by the “ugly shells “
of war.  W. T. Sherman, Maj. Genl.”  $1,500    

After successfully completing his March to the Sea by
capturing Savannah, Georgia, he continued his march
through North Carolina.  With no hope left to win the war,
