19284  Four Civil War Nurse’s Letters  Three of the letters
are written to the wife of John S. Smith, 5th NY Cavalry
(dated July and August 1863) and one letter written to John
S. Smith’s brother-in-law Lyman Williams dated October 13,
1864. Smith had survived Gettysburg only to be seriously
wounded on July 6, 1863 at the battle of Hagerstown. He was
shot in the arm, taken prisoner, and paroled without
receiving any medical attention. Nurse Kate Updegraff and
her husband took him into their home and nursed him and
had him treated by their family physician, Dr. Claggett
Dorsey.  Dr. Dorsey was forced to provide medical treatment
to the fleeing Confederate army during their retreat from
Gettysburg in 1863.  $650
