1849 graduate of West Point. Served as divisional commander under William S. Rosecrans, George H. Thomas, and W. T. Sherman. He played a prominent role in the forces which removed Braxton Bragg from Tenn., held Horseshoe Ridge at Chickamauga, and caused the capitulation of Joseph E. Johnston in North
Carolina. He was awarded the CMOH for voluntarily leading a detached brigade in an assault upon the enemy's works at Jonesboro, Georgia.
