Navy and Marine in Panama CDV of a trio of officers taken about 1867 in Panama. All three men had served in the U.S. Civil War. Standing is Navy Surgeon Edward Sylvester Matthews. Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from Columbian College in Washington, D.C. in 1860 and received a commission as an assistant surgeon in 1861. Seated on the left is Marine Lt. Charles Allyn Stillman of Massachusetts. He assisted in the capture of Port Royal, S.C. Charles E. Boggs, seated on the right, of New Brunswick, N.J. started his war service as an acting assistant paymaster in 1862.
