Rebecca, an
Emancipated Slave from New Orleans
CDV of Rebecca in a standing pose. You will note that Rebecca doesn’t
look very African American. A person
only needed to be 1/8 black to be deemed a person of color. She was chosen
specifically because she looked white and white donors could theoretically see
themselves in her. Taken by Kimball in New York, printed in the back is this
message,”The net proceeds from the sale of these photographs will be devoted
exclusively to the education of colored people in the Department of the Gulf,
now under command of Maj. Gen. Banks.”
