Militia Man with Sword ΒΌ plate ambrotype circa 1855-60 Militia. This soldier is wearing a plumed chapeau and holding one of the many varieties of militia swords that were popular throughout the 1830-60 period. The buttons are 22-23mm staff/three-piece but are gilded over. The belt plate is a two-piece tongue & wreath interlocking type. These were very popular with the state militia throughout the 1845-60 era. The coat also has light colored epaulets, stand-up collar and plastron down the front. Likely a Massachusetts or New York soldier.
