The
2nd Delaware Infantry Regiment, organized in Wilmington, Delaware, from June to
October 1861, served in the Union Army’s II Corps, Army of the Potomac.
Nicknamed the "Crazy Delawares,” it included companies from Philadelphia and
Elkton, Maryland. Initially assigned to Dix’s Command in Baltimore, it joined
the Peninsula Campaign in 1862, fighting at Gaines’ Mill, Savage Station, and
Malvern Hill. The regiment saw action at Antietam (Sunken Road),
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, where it charged into Rose
Woods, capturing prisoners but suffering heavy losses (11 killed, 61 wounded,
12 missing). In 1864, it fought in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania’s "Mule Shoe,”
Cold Harbor, and Petersburg’s Jerusalem Plank Road. Mustered out on July 1, 1864,
veterans transferred to the 1st Delaware Infantry. The regiment lost 201 men: 6
officers and 93 enlisted killed or mortally wounded, 1 officer and 101 enlisted
to disease. It published its own newspaper, the Regimental Flag, and earned a
distinguished reputation.
