The regiment joined Foster’s Brigade in Burnside’s Coast Division, participating in key engagements like the Battle of Roanoke Island (February 8, 1862) and the Battle of New Bern (March 14, 1862), where it suffered losses, including Lieutenant Charles F. Glover. Under Kurtz’s leadership, the 23rd saw action in North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina, notably at Wyse Fork (March 8, 1865), its final engagement, with three killed and ten wounded. The regiment lost 218 men overall—84 killed or fatally wounded and 134 by disease.
