General James Bowen A standing view CDV holding his hat. Back marked E Jacobs, New Orleans. Top of card has been rounded. During the war, he organized six volunteer regiments in New York. In 1862, he was sent to New Orleans, serving one year before being appointed provost marshal of the Department of the Gulf, overseeing Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama. Health issues forced his resignation before the war’s end. His military contributions included logistical and administrative roles rather than battlefield command. After the war, he returned to his railroad career and died in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
