General James Murrell Shackleford A seated view CDV as general. Back marked Charles D. Fredricks & Co, New York. Appointed colonel of the 25th Kentucky Infantry in 1862, he served at Fort Donelson. In 1863, Shackelford gained prominence by capturing Confederate cavalry commander John Hunt Morgan, ending "Morgan's Raid." That year, he led a brigade at Cumberland Gap, contributing to its capture under Ambrose Burnside. Promoted to command a division in the XXIII Corps and later the Cavalry Corps in the Army of the Ohio, his forces secured key crossroads at Campbell’s Station and participated in the Siege of Knoxville. Shackelford pursued Confederate forces under James Longstreet post-Knoxville. After the war, he became the first federal judge in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), resuming his legal career.
