The 3rd New York Light Artillery, originally the 19th New York Infantry, was organized in Elmira and mustered in on May 22, 1861, under Colonel John S. Clark. Re-designated as artillery on December 11, 1861, under Colonel James H. Ledlie. Recruited from Cayuga, Seneca, Wayne, and other counties, it initially served as infantry in Washington, D.C., and with Patterson’s and Banks’ commands. Converted to light artillery, its batteries (A, B, E, F, H, K, M) operated in North and South Carolina (18th and 10th Corps) and the Army of the James. Engagements included Kinston, Goldsboro, New Berne, Petersburg, and Appomattox. The regiment lost 309 men: 14 killed, 8 died of wounds, and 287 from disease or other causes. Batteries mustered out between June 2 and July 24, 1865, at Syracuse and Richmond. The 3rd New York Independent Battery, a separate unit, served with the Army of the Potomac’s VI Corps, participating in Bull Run, Yorktown, and Gettysburg, mustering out June 24, 1865.
