General Alfred Pleasonton A seated view CDV back marked C.D. Fredricks& Co., New York. Commanding cavalry in the Army of the Potomac, he led at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. His most notable role came at Brandy Station (June 1863), the war’s largest cavalry battle, and Gettysburg, where he claimed credit for repelling J.E.B. Stuart, though historians debate his role. Promoted to major general, he led the Cavalry Corps but faced criticism for tactical decisions. After Gettysburg, he served in Missouri, suppressing guerrillas like Quantrill.
