General Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert A beautiful standing view CDV back marked E&HT Anthony, Brady’s National Portrait Gallery, New York. Commissioned as a captain in the 1st New Jersey Infantry, he rose to brigadier general by 1862. Torbert commanded infantry at Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, and Fredericksburg. In 1863, he shifted to cavalry, leading the 1st New Jersey Cavalry Brigade. Promoted to major general in 1864, he commanded the Army of the Shenandoah’s cavalry under Sheridan, excelling at Third Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, and Cedar Creek. His forces disrupted Confederate supply lines, notably at Trevilian Station. After the war, he served as U.S. consul in El Salvador and later as a diplomat in France, dying in a shipwreck off Nova Scotia in 1880.
