He was appointed by U.S. Grant to be Chief Military Engineer. When the war broke out, he went to the battlefield at Corinth, Mississippi where he commanded an infantry brigade. He later would be appointed to lead the Union’s 17th Corps during the campaign to capture Vicksburg. He continued to rise in rank and led 12,00 men during the Battle of Raymond. McPherson died too young, age 36, when he was killed during the Atlanta Campaign. General Sherman wept openly upon hearing about the death of the Major General.
