Confederate General William Nelson Rector Beall Signed CDV A beautiful seated view period ink ID on the front and signed on the reverse "Wm R. Beall Bg Gen P.C.S.A. Arkansas” With 2 cent revenue stamp. Beall was a Confederate brigadier general noted for his supply efforts for prisoners of war. Born in Bardstown, Kentucky, and raised in Arkansas, he graduated 30th in his 1848 West Point class. Commissioned as a brevet second lieutenant in the U.S. 4th Infantry, Beall served on the northwestern frontier, then in the 5th Infantry in Indian Territory and Texas (1849–1855). Promoted to first lieutenant and captain in the 1st Cavalry, he fought in skirmishes against western tribes. In 1861, he resigned to join the Confederate Army as a cavalry captain in the Trans-Mississippi Department under Earl Van Dorn. Promoted to brigadier general in spring 1862, he commanded cavalry at Corinth, Mississippi, and a brigade from Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. Beall led Port Hudson’s defenses from September to December 1862. During the Siege of Port Hudson (1863), he was captured and imprisoned at Johnson’s Island, Ohio. Paroled in 1864 to supply Confederate prisoners by selling cotton in New York, his parole was briefly suspended for alleged misconduct. Released in August 1865, he became a merchant and died in 1883 in Tennessee.
