Iowa GeneralJacob Gartner Lauman WIA Belmont A bust view CDV of Lauman who recruited volunteers and was commissioned colonel of the 7th Iowa Infantry in July 1861. Serving under Ulysses S. Grant, Lauman was wounded at the Battle of Belmont but led his regiment with distinction, suffering heavy losses. He commanded a brigade at Fort Donelson, earning a promotion to brigadier general in March 1862. Lauman led brigades at Shiloh and Hatchie’s Bridge, showing bravery. In 1863, he commanded a division in the Vicksburg Campaign but was relieved by William T. Sherman after poor performance during the Siege of Jackson. Post-war, he was brevetted major general in 1865 but struggled with health issues from his Belmont wound and died in 1867, buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington. A bronze bust honors him at Vicksburg National Military Park.
