General William Woods Averell A West Point graduate (1855), he served in the pre-war U.S. Army, wounded fighting the Navajo in 1859. In 1861, he joined the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry as a lieutenant colonel, becoming colonel in 1862. Known for bold raids, Averell led cavalry operations in the Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia, notably at Kelly’s Ford (1863) and Droop Mountain (1863). Promoted to brigadier general in 1863, he commanded the 2nd Cavalry Division under Sheridan, fighting at Third Winchester and Cedar Creek in 1864. His aggressive tactics disrupted Confederate supply lines. Brevetted major general in 1865, Averell resigned from the army in 1865.
