General George Stoneman Jr. In 1861, as a captain in the 2nd U.S. Cavalry, he refused to surrender his command to Confederates in Texas. Promoted to major general in 1862, he commanded the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, but his performance at Chancellorsville (1863) drew criticism for ineffective raids, leading to his reassignment. In 1864, Stoneman led successful raids in Virginia and, under Sherman, conducted the Stoneman Raid in 1865, disrupting Confederate infrastructure in Virginia and North Carolina. Captured in 1864, he was briefly a Confederate prisoner, the highest-ranking Union officer captured. Post-war, he served as a military administrator in Virginia and Tennessee, later commanding in Arizona. Retiring in 1871, Stoneman became a California railroad commissioner and governor (1883–1887). His raids, though inconsistent, significantly impacted Confederate supply lines. Back marked E&HT Anthony, Brady’s National Portrait Gallery.
