General Franz Sigel CDV, full standing view of the general in uniform. A German by birth, he emigrated to the U.S and eventually became a teacher in St. Louis and a leader of the area’s large German population. As part of Pres. Lincoln’s plan to court anti-slavery, Unionist immigrants, Sigel was commissioned first brigadier and soon after, major general. He served under Gen. Lyon at the capture of the secessionist Camp Jackson and at Wilson’s Creek. He was at his best at Pea Ridge, where he personally directed the Union artillery in the demoralizing slaughter of Gen. Van Dorn’s Confederates. Back mark E. & H.T. Anthony, New York.
