General Russell A. Alger 5th and 6th Michigan WIA A seated civilian view of Alger. When the Civil War began, Alger enlisted in the Union Army as a private. He rose to the rank of brevet major general, serving in 5th and 6th Michigan Cavalry regiments. He was recognized for his military strategy and bravery, including an instance where he was wounded and briefly captured at the Battle of Boonsville in 1862. He also served as Governor of Michigan, Secretary of War, and U.S. Senator. No back mark.
