General Daniel Sickles CDV, waist up profile view, of the general in uniform wearing a Western style hat. He is known as the man who in 1859 shot his wife’s lover, the son of Francis Scott Key, for which he was later acquitted. In 1861 he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers, a reward for his support of Pres. Lincoln’s war policy and for raising a brigade of soldiers in New York. He advanced to major general and division command. He was severely wounded at Gettysburg and lost his leg, for which he received the Medal of Honor.
