Confederate General George Bibb Crittenden The son of a U.S. Senator and brother to a Union general, Crittenden graduated from West Point in 1832 and served in the Black Hawk and Mexican-American wars. During the Civil War, he sided with the Confederacy despite his family's Unionist sympathies. He commanded Confederate forces at the Battle of Mill Springs, a defeat for the Confederacy in January 1862. Following the battle, he was accused of drunkenness on duty and was arrested. He resigned his commission as a general in October 1862 but continued to serve in a lesser capacity for the remainder of the war. After the war, Crittenden was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson.
