General Darius Nash Couch A seated view CDV of Couch who was a Union Army general who served with distinction during the Civil War, commanding the Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac. A West Point graduate and veteran of the Mexican-American War, he rejoined the army when the Civil War began. He played a strategic role in the Gettysburg Campaign by delaying Confederate forces, preventing their crossing of the Susquehanna River. His military career included commanding divisions that saw action, and he was present for President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, where he was in charge of the ceremonies.
