Patriotic Union Zouave- 1/9 plate tintype of a Zouave private with reenlistment stripes. His coat is similar to that of the 48th Ohio Veteran Volunteers. The image is a match except for two trefoils, created from gilt tape, on each of the two front panels of the coat. The 48th O.V.V. photograph shown from Miller's Zouave Book has Austrian knots at the cuff comparable to this image, along with Veteran’s stripes. It also has gilt tape encircling the top and bottom edges of the collar, and down the front on the vertical edge next to the buttonholes. It was even designed to button up, which 95% of Zouave jackets are not equipped to do, instead closing with a false vest or just buttoning solely at the neck. To top it off, the 48th O.V.V. soldier in the Miller book is wearing a kepi with gold chasseur trim, similar to this guy. He is housed in both a patriotic mat and patriotic thermoplastic case with a small corner chip.
