extreme emaciation due to a mysterious wasting disease that began in his teens,
leaving him skeletal despite a hearty appetite, and he became a sensation with
P.T. Barnum's shows. Despite his condition, he married and had three sons but
died in poverty in Chicago at age 45, a tragic figure known for his baffling
illness and brief fame. No back mark
