Confederate lieutenant general William Joseph Hardee One of Hardeeās greatest contributions was his 1855 manual, Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics, which served as the standard drill guide for both Union and Confederate armies during the American Civil War. Hardee was wounded while leading his corps at Shiloh. At Stones River he executed a massive surprise assault on the Union right flank. During the Atlanta Campaign he served as a key corps commander under Joseph E. Johnston and John Bell Hood. In the war's final months, he commanded the defense of Savannah against William T. Sherman before surrendering in North Carolina in April 1865. Post-war, he served as a railroad president in Alabama. All four corners of the CDV are rounded and it is back marked E.
