Confederate General James Ewell Brown "Jeb" Stuart was the legendary cavalry commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, famously described by Robert E. Lee as the "eyes and ears" of the Confederate army. A West Point graduate, Stuart was known for his flamboyant style sporting a plumed hat and red-lined cape and his daring, high-profile raids. Stuart became a Southern sensation in 1862 after twice "riding around" the Union Army of the Potomac, gathering vital intelligence while humiliating Northern command. His mastery of reconnaissance and screening was critical at victories like Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg. At Chancellorsville, he even proved his versatility by temporarily commanding "Stonewall" Jackson’s infantry corps. However, Stuart’s legacy is often debated due to his absence at Gettysburg, where his decision to go on a wide-ranging raid left Lee without intelligence during the battle's opening days. His career ended during the 1864 Overland Campaign when he was mortally wounded at the battle of Yellow Tavern while defending Richmond. He died on May 12, 1864, at the age of 31. This CDV has a tack hole at the top and is back marked The New York Photographic Company, New York.
