McClellan. He became one of Robert E. Lee’s most trusted subordinates, distinguishing himself at battles such as Antietam, where his timely arrival saved the Confederate flank. Promoted to corps command following Stonewall Jackson’s death, Hill himself was killed by a Union soldier on April 2, 1865, while attempting to rally his troops during the breakthrough at Petersburg, just days before the war ended.
