Known for his abrasive wit and religious devotion, he was the brother-in-law of Stonewall Jackson. During the Civil War, Hill earned a reputation as a fierce combat leader. Key actions included:

The Peninsula: Distinguishing himself at Seven Pines and the Seven Days Battles. At Antietam his division heroically held the "Bloody Lane", where he famously had three horses shot from under him.
