Northwest Territory 180212.5” X 7.5” Cincinnati has just two months earlier been chartered as a town. It was still more than 2 years away from Lewis and Clark leaving St Louis with the Corps of Discovery.

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
TO the Justices of our Court of Common pleas for the County of Ross, Greeting:

Because in the record and process and also in the giving of judgment in the plaint which was in our court before you and your fellows, Judges of the said court, by our writ between Jacob Lewis plaintiff and Thomas Gregg defendant of a certain debt of one hundred & two dolls: 25 c: damages: thirty dols which the said Jacob Lewis demands of the said Thomas Gregg, manifest error hath intervened, to the great damage of the said Thos Gregg — as we from his complaint are informed; WE being willing that the error, if any there be, should be corrected in due manner, and that full and speedy justice should be done to the parties aforesaid in this behalf, do Command you that if judgment thereof be given, then under your seal you do distinctly and openly send the record and process of the plaint aforesaid, with all things concerning them, and also this writ; so that we may have them before our general court to be next held at Marietta on the Third Tuesday of October, that the record and process aforesaid being inspected, we may cause to be done thereupon, for correcting that error, what of right and according to law ought to be done.

WITNESS the Honble John Cleves Symmes esquire — one of our judges in and over the Territory aforesaid, with the seal of our General Court affixed, at Cincinnati in the term of March, and year one thousand eight hundred and two.
