Confederate
General Ambrose Powell Hill Hill’s most famous moment came at the Battle of
Antietam, where his division arrived after a 17-mile forced march just in time
to save Robert E. Lee's army from defeat. After Stonewall Jackson’s death, Hill
was promoted to Lieutenant General and given command of the Third Corps. He was
known for wearing a bright red "battle shirt" during combat and for
his prickly personality, which led to frequent feuds with other generals like
James Longstreet and Stonewall Jackson. Hill was killed in action on April 2, 1865,
during the Union breakthrough at Petersburg, only a week before the Confederate
surrender at Appomattox. Back marked E& HT Anthony, New York.
