albumen- Walker was a distinguished officer in the famed 8th Texas Cavalry,
better known as Terry's Texas Rangers. An 1858 graduate of the Kentucky Military
Institute (KMI) and a resident of Richmond, Texas. He entered the Confederate
service in September 1861, originally enlisting as a private in Company H. His
career saw rapid advancement due to his capabilities. He rose from private to
Ordnance Sergeant in 1862, and eventually to Captain and Assistant Adjutant on
the staff of General John Austin Wharton. Walker participated in numerous
significant engagements, including the Battle of Woodsonville (1861), the
Battle of Shiloh (1862), the Perryville Campaign, and raids under General
Nathan Bedford Forrest. Captain Walker was mortally wounded during the Battle of
Murfreesboro (also known as the Battle of Stones River) on December 31, 1862.
General Wharton's subsequent official report on January 23, 1863, confirmed
that his assistant inspector-general, Walker, "has since died of his
wounds". He
is shown in an officer's frock coat featuring prominent epaulettes. He has a
two-piece belt plate and sword. The lower portion of the image contains a
handwritten inscription: "Yours in bonds of ΔΚΕ [Delta Kappa Epsilon], J.
T. Walker," indicating his fraternity affiliation during his time at the
Kentucky Military Institute. The photograph is housed in a carved, dark oval
frame with intricate floral and scrollwork.
