was a cavalry officer whose career spanned over five decades. Harney entered
the army in 1818. He gained renown and a reputation for ruthless frontier
tactics during conflicts with Native Americans, notably commanding the brutal
1855 attack on a Brulé Lakota encampment at the Battle of Blue Water, which
earned him hostile sobriquets among the Lakota. During the Mexican-American
War, he was brevetted to brigadier general for bravery at Cerro Gordo. As
commander of the Department of Oregon in 1859, Harney ordered troops to occupy
San Juan Island, precipitating the bloodless confrontation with Great Britain
known as the Pig War. Relieved of his command in St. Louis at the outbreak of
the Civil War due to suspected Southern sympathies, he retired in 1863. Later
in life, Harney served on the Indian Peace Commission, working to negotiate
treaties with Plains Indians. He died in Florida in 1889 and is the namesake of
several western landmarks, including Harney County, Oregon.
