General Henry Halleck CDV In 1861 he accepted a commission as major general in the Union Army. He received credit for the victories of Ulysses S. Grant, but when Halleck himself went into the field, at Corinth, Mississippi, in 1862, he proved to be slow and cautious. In 1864 he was named chief of staff, a position he held until the end of the war. Back marked D. Appleton & Co.
