General Alfred Napoléon Duffié A waist up CDV in uniform and back marked E&HT Anthony, New York.
Duffié
joined the Union Army, commissioned as a captain in the 2nd New York Cavalry in
1861. Promoted to colonel of the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry in 1862, he led a
bold charge at Kelly’s Ford in 1863, defying orders. Elevated to command the
2nd Cavalry Division, his delay at Brandy Station led to demotion. Promoted to
brigadier general in 1863, he trained cavalry in West Virginia but was captured
by Confederate guerrillas in 1864. Paroled in 1865, he served briefly in
Missouri before mustering out. Duffié later became U.S. Consul in Cadiz, Spain,
dying of tuberculosis in 1880.
