David McMurtrie Gregg a West Point graduate, served in the 2nd U.S. Dragoons on the frontier before the war. In 1861, Gregg joined the 3rd U.S. Cavalry, soon transferring to the 6th U.S. Cavalry as a captain. By 1862, he was promoted to colonel of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Gregg’s leadership shone in the Peninsula Campaign and at Antietam, where his regiment provided critical support. In December 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general, commanding a cavalry division in the Army of the Potomac. His division played a pivotal role at Chancellorsville and the Battle of Gettysburg (1863), where he repelled Confederate cavalry at East Cavalry Field, securing the Union flank. Gregg led effectively at Brandy Station, the largest cavalry battle of the war, and in the Overland Campaign of 1864.
