Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Cavalry, he served on the frontier, including in Kansas during the Bleeding Kansas conflicts, and was wounded in a skirmish with Kiowa Indians in 1860. When the Civil War began, Bayard was promoted to captain in the 4th U.S. Cavalry. In 1861, he became colonel of the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry, leading it in the Shenandoah Valley and at battles like Harrisonburg. Promoted to brigadier general in April 1862, he commanded a cavalry brigade in the Army of the Potomac, serving with distinction at Cross Keys and Cedar Mountain. Bayard was mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, struck by a Confederate artillery shell while directing his brigade, dying later that day at age 27.
