General Napoleon Bonaparte Buford 27th Illinois The half-brother of John Buford, he served as colonel of the 27th Illinois Infantry, fighting at Belmont and commanding the "Flotilla Brigade” at Island Number Ten. Promoted to brigadier general in April 1862, he led a brigade at Corinth and served on the court-martial of Fitz John Porter. Briefly a major general in 1862, he reverted to brigadier general in 1863, commanding the District of East Arkansas until 1865.Back marked Brady’s National Portrait Gallery, New York and Washington D.C.
