Brig. Gen. Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel CDV. West Point Class of 1829. His passion was astronomy and he was largely responsible for establishing the Naval Observatory and the Harvard Observatory. Upon appointment by
Pres. Lincoln, he was initially assigned to command the Dept of the Ohio. He didn’t see any fighting, but he did seize the Memphis & Charleston RR and sent raiding expeditions to Stevenson and Decatur, AL, temporarily securing the track to the Union forces. At the end of the
war he was transferred to command the Dept. of the South and the X Corps. He died of yellow fever. Backmark Charles Taber & Co., Manufacturers, New Bedford, Mass.
