Marcellus Clay Pencil Signed CDV A beautiful image of
the fiery Kentucky emancipationist, Civil War-era diplomat, and politician. Born into wealth and
slavery, he became a radical abolitionist who famously protected his printing
presses with a Bowie knife and cannons. Clay served as Lincoln’s Minister to
Russia and was a key figure in the U.S. purchase of Alaska. He was a founding
member of the national Republican Party and a staunch ally of Abraham Lincoln.
He was highly influential in persuading Lincoln to issue the Emancipation
Proclamation. Despite his emancipationist stance and political work, Clay
remained a slave owner himself until the conclusion of the Civil War. He
opposed slavery primarily for its negative economic impacts on white labor,
rather than the moral abolitionist arguments for Black equality. No back mark,
pencil signed on the verso.
