8th Minnesota. Edgar W. Bass by G.K. Warren Mount measures 13 X 10 in. Bass graduated from West Point in 1868 and is shown here in his West Point uniform from 1868. On 13 August 1862, he entered the military service as a Private in Company K, Eighth Minnesota regiment, U.S. Volunteers. In December of the same year he was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant. His enlistment coincided with the "Sioux Indian outbreak". He served against the Sioux Indians and was discharged 30 June 1864 to begin his appointment as a cadet at USMA. He graduated USMA 4th in a class of 54 on 15 June 1868.
