Zachary Taylor LS The future U.S. President transmits clothing estimates as he is concerned abut accidents on the Mississippi between New Orleans and St Louis and between St Louis and Washington. A beautiful early Taylor letter.

Headquarters New Orleans 8 March 1828

I have the honor to enclose you, estimates of clothing, camp equipage etc. for the four companies of the first infantry under my command at this point.

This document though not demanded by regulations, is transmitted direct to your office, for fear of accidents which might occur between this place and Jefferson Barracks, and that post and Washington; it is forwarded at this early date in consequence of the construction given by Colonel McNeil to Par 30. "Clothing Accountabilityā€¯; which as be considered Jefferson barracks on the "Upper Mississippiā€¯ would require the estimates to be transmitted by the first March I am sir with much respect your obedient servant Zachary Taylor Colonel first US infantry
